Amy Cruickshank presented on putting on a Salon style event at Southwood in conjunction with TedX Waterloo Youth.
The Plan:
Organizers from TedX Waterloo Youth came to explain what a salon could look like.
The Collaboration:
Used a theatre model to help determine the need for co-ordinators (links to Careers) and used democratic decision making to vote for who should be the coordinators (links to Civics).
The Event:
Filled the cafeteria and it included poetry, music, dramatic readings. There was food. All proceeds went to the Safe Haven youth project.
Co-ordinated with community partnerships.
Teachable Moments:
Set the foundation that it was okay to take risks and figure out failure. The example of the coffee biting into the budget.
Self Assessment:
Asked students to look at transferable skills (careers studies).
Research a couple of careers that related from the transferable skills from the coffee house.
Curriculum Connections:
Drew on writing reflections in English.
Reflection
They were able to use the foundation of the experience to help support other activities and learning.
Several students had their blogs posted in conjunction with TedX Youth @Waterloo.
